On this page you will find the FULL 7 session curriculum of the Stop Smoking class hosted at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and SFDPH’s 25 Van Ness Avenue location. Included are the materials for the 7 class sessions separated into the Facilitator Guides and the Participant Handouts, ready to be downloaded and adapted to the needs of your program and population.

Orientation:

The purpose of the orientation session is to introduce the program, and the class structure, let the participants know what to expect, and set an overall positive tone for the series.

This session covers:

  • Introductions and program overview
  • What it takes to quit smoking
  • Quitting methods – NRT and other medications

Class 1: Getting Started:

The goal of Class 1 is to set a positive tone, and lay the foundation for subsequent sessions. The class will build on participants’ motivation to change their smoking and increase awareness of their personal smoking habits.

This session will cover:

  • How smoking becomes a habit
  • Motivation to become a non-smoker
  • Pack tracking and preparing to quit

The goal of Class 2 is to increase the participants’ awareness of their smoking habits and build their confidence in quitting.

This session will cover:

  • How tobacco causes disease

The goal of Class 3 is for participants to develop a personal tobacco-free plan, and get inspired to keep their commitment.

This session will cover:

  • Dealing with cravings
  • Questions about NRT/ Medication

Class 4: Success Over Stress:

The goal of Class 4 is to affirm the act and process of becoming tobacco-free and staying with the program; To promote an ongoing plan of action; To review the benefits of stopping smoking and discuss stress, emotions and the grieving process.

This session will cover:

  • Benefits of being tobacco-free
  • Stress and emotions
  • The Grief Process – letting go of tobacco
  • Deep breathing and meditation

The goal of session 5 is to give the participants a wide range of healthy options to consider adopting as they strive to become and stay smoke-free.

The goal of session 6 is to provide direction for long-term success as a non-smoker and to celebrate the accomplishments of the participants.
